ABSTRACT.
The objective was to evaluate the effect of the characteristics of the onset of the postpartum ovarian activity on the reproductive efficiency of dairy cows. Eighty-four Holstein cows (43 multiparous and 41 primiparous) were utilized and ovarian function was assessed by milk progesterone and ultrasonography. The experimental period was from day 10 postpartum to first breeding. Intervals from calving to: first ovulation, first observed estrus, first service and conception were 35,4±4,9, 80,8±8,6, 103,4±7,1 and 126,8±9,1 (days, mean±SEM) without differences within categories. Body condition at calving prolonged the interval from calving to first ovulation in primiparous. Estrus detection rate (61,9%), and pregnancy rate (26,2%) were affected by the ovarian activity prior to beginning of the breeding season. Pregnancy rate for cows with two or more estrous cycles prior to breeding was 81% and for cows with none or one previous cycle was 19%. Estrus detection rate was 62% for cows with a normal previous cycle (17 to 24 days) and 38% for cow with a short previous cycle. It was concluded that for a good reproductive efficiency normal ovarian activity must be resumed prior to the beginning of the breeding season.
RESUMEN.
El objetivo del trabajo fue evaluar el efecto de las características del reinicio de la actividad ovárica, posparto en la eficiencia reproductiva de vacas de leche. Se utilizaron 84 vacas Holstein (43 multíparas y 41 primíparas) y se determinó la actividad ovárica por medio de progesterona en leche y ultrasonografía. Se determinó además el peso y la condición corporal al parto y la producción de leche. El período experimental fue desde los 10 días posparto hasta la primera inseminación. Los intervalos del parto a: primera ovulación, primer celo observado, primer servicio y concepción fueron 35,4± 4,9 y 80,8± 8,6, 103,4± 7.1, y 126,8± 9,1 (días, media± error estándar) sin diferencias entre categorías. El único factor que afectó estos intervalos fue la condición corporal al parto entre vaquillas y vacas adultas. El porcentaje de detección de celo (61,9%) y el porcentaje de preñez (26,2%) fue afectado por la actividad ovárica previa al inicio del período de servicios. Animales con dos o más ciclos previos al primer servicio tuvieron un porcentaje de preñez del 81%, en comparación con 19% para los que tuvieron solamente uno o ninguno (P<0,01). El porcentaje de detección de celos estuvo afectado por las características del ciclo previo, y en 62% de los animales detectados en celo el ciclo previo fue de duración normal (P<0,05). Se concluyó que para maximizar la eficiencia reproductiva, la actividad ovárica normal debe reiniciarse previo al inicio del período de servicios. MenosABSTRACT.
